On the work

The Institute is a standing committee on the whispering draft. It convenes where the human hand meets the machines that have lately learned to finish its sentences, and it keeps the records the written soul would rather we lost.

We do not ask whether the machine can write. That question has been answered, tediously, by people with louder microphones than ours. We ask the narrower and more haunted question: what becomes of the writer who lets it into the room. The papers we issue are filed in continuous session, released in full, and signed by a doctorate that was actually earned.

The names are long because the bureaucracy is real. The redactions are honest because the concealment is the point. Everything else, we are prepared to admit, we already knew.

The Standing Departments

Dept. 001

Ghostwritten Souls

Catalogues the meaning that survives when the words are taken away. Holds the master index of everything an author meant but did not type.

Bureau 002

Plausible Deniability

Maintains the redactions. Determines, on a case-by-case basis, which truths the Institute is prepared to admit it already knew.

Committee 003

The Whispering Draft

Sits in continuous session over the unfinished sentence. Has not adjourned since founding and does not intend to.

Office 004

The Chief Narrative Architect

Signs the papers, supplies the proportion, and answers, when pressed, to a doctorate it actually earned.

The Editorial Standard

Every artifact the Institute releases, whether set in lead for the page or in light for the screen, obeys the same house standard. It is reproduced here in full, because an institute that hides its style sheet has something to hide.

Cormorant

Set in small caps for institutional headings, in roman 500 for titles. High contrast, faintly gothic, which suits a discipline named hauntology.

Body face

EB Garamond

Justified, hyphenated, generously leaded. The screen evocation of the Times-set working paper. It carries argument, not ornament.

Utility face

IBM Plex Mono

Reserved for the dossier: filing codes, working-paper numbers, dates, and stamps. Never for prose. The bureaucracy speaks in monospace.

The signature mark

Redaction

An aubergine bar that lifts on hover to declassify the phrase beneath. Used sparingly, and only where concealment is itself the point.

  • No em dashes appear in any Institute document, on the page or on the screen. The colon, the semicolon, and the parenthesis do the work.
  • En dashes are admitted for ranges of date or number only (for example, 1939–1945).
  • Section headings are set in small caps and the Institute aubergine; subsection heads in italic.
  • Body copy is justified with hanging hyphenation; rules are hairline, doubled at the masthead.
  • Every release carries the seal, the working-paper number in Roman numerals, and a colophon naming which part of the work was the Institute's own.
